Achieving your personal goals : Tips for success

The other day, a colleague asked me, “I’ve set so many personal goals for the year and I want to pursue a hobby but I’m already missing deadlines. How do I achieve them?” As I shared my learnings, I realized we’re all drowning in daily chaos. Most of us don’t even know where to start. So, I thought about my own chaotic journey, and guess what? It was just as messy until I figured out some tricks. So here are some tips that can help you hit your targets—or at least get closer to them without a complete mental breakdown:

  1. Break your annual goals into tiny, manageable pieces – Take those big, intimidating yearly goals and slice them into monthly or quarterly chunks. This way, you’re only freaking out about the next couple of months instead of a year-long avalanche of stress.
  2. Don’t overload your plate with goals –Sure, you want to do everything, but remember, you’re not a superhero. Think big, challenge yourself, but also keep it real—your work and family also need your time. Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
  3. Set your own goals, not the ones everyone else is doing to look cool –Don’t follow the crowd. Do what you want to do, not what an Instagram influencer is hyping up this week. When you choose your goal, you’ll care about it—unlike that “new year, new me” yoga challenge that’s already gathering dust in the corner.
  4. Don’t share your goals with people who treat life like one big obstacle course – Share them with the achievers—the folks who’ve done big things. They’ll lift you up and show you how it’s done.
  5. If you have a goal you’re embarrassed to share, keep it to yourself – Your goals are yours—no one else needs to approve them. If you need to achieve them in stealth mode, do it. Be proud of what you want, and don’t let anyone’s opinion slow you down..
  6. Get people on your team – There’s no need to do it alone. You’d be surprised how many people are waiting for a cause to get behind. Your goal could be exactly what they need to get motivated too. More hands, less stress—plus, you’ll have a cheerleading squad.
  7. Celebrate every little win – No, you don’t need to throw a parade or pop champagne (unless you want to). Just texting a friend and saying, “Hey, I did a thing!” and getting a well-deserved “You’re amazing!” will give you that sweet boost of dopamine.
  8. Believe in yourself – Trust that you’ve got what it takes. If you don’t believe in your own awesomeness, don’t go around blaming the world when things don’t work out. The world’s busy, it’s not going to do the believing for you!

Many of you are probably thinking this sounds easy, but it’s not realistic because these personal goals or hobbies are like trying to squeeze a yoga class into a schedule that’s already bursting with meetings, emails, and pretending to look busy. It’s like trying to fit a cat into a suitcase – it’s just not happening! And yeah, I get it— Who has time for personal goals when you’re just trying to survive the day? But here’s the thing—life might not be a walk in the park but it’s not impossible to squeeze in a personal goal. We all know the corporate race never stops. You hit a milestone, you get that title or paycheck, and boom—by the time you celebrate, the game has changed. Your colleague is already doing better, there is new competition, and suddenly you’re back in the rat race. And it’s a vicious circle… unless, of course, you’ve reached that magical level of “I’m content with my life.”

So, here’s the thing—take a pause. Breathe. And ask yourself: What am I doing for me? Not for the paycheck, not for the title, not for the family, but for you. What’s your long-lost hobby, your childhood dream, or something that’s just good for your mental health? It could be anything that makes you feel like a human being and not a corporate robot. These questions will bring you back to your personal goal, and then you’ll pick one of the 8 ways to achieve it—or come up with your own.

So, go ahead—tackle those goals and remember, no goal is too big to start with a tiny step.
