Wake Up Your Funny Bone and Watch The Magic Happen

Recently my dad participated in a laughter session where people from various communities came together to laugh. Watching the video of this event, I couldn’t help but smile and my 7-year-old daughter laughed even more as she saw her grandfather in the clip. It struck me just how powerful laughter is—one smiling or laughing face can spread joy like wildfire. If laughter has that much power, why do we laugh so little? Some of you might be thinking, “I laugh a lot,” but hold on – research says otherwise.

Studies show that people start to lose their sense of humor around the age of 23. This fascinating finding was shared in “Humour, Seriously”, written by Jennifer Aaker, a psychology professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business, and Naomi Bagdonas, a lecturer at the same institution. The study revealed that a typical 4-year-old laughs up to 300 times a day, while a 40-year-old laughs just 300 times over 10 weeks. Yep, you read that right—10 weeks!

So, what’s behind this humor drought? Let’s break it down:

  • We’re all sprinting in some race—whether it’s for a bigger paycheck, that elusive promotion or a bigger house. This means stress is sky-high, and laughter is nowhere to be found.
  • Everyone’s so fixated on reaching the finish line, they forget the journey—with all its bumps and bruises, which could be the funniest part.
  • We’re too busy checking things off our to-do list instead of making memories that will make us laugh later.
  • At work, the line between “funny” and “unprofessional” is so blurry, it might as well be invisible.
  • We’re quick to judge every mistake, whether it’s from our coworkers, friends, or even our kids, but forget to just laugh at the tiny blunders that are no big deal.

Researchers from Finland and the UK have discovered that social laughter triggers the release of endorphins, those “feel-good hormones” that make you feel like you’re winning at life. These endorphins can be especially helpful when you’re feeling awkward or are down in the dumps.

Also, laughter doesn’t just make your brain happy, it gives your body a mini workout too. It exercises your diaphragm, lets you inhale more oxygen and even gives your lungs a little pep talk. When you combine it with yoga—yes, laughter yoga is a thing—it’s been found to improve your sleep quality. So, forget counting sheep and just laugh your way to better sleep!

Looking at all these perks, the medical community now considers Laughter therapy as a legit mood booster for mental health and immune system strength. And, as if that wasn’t enough, humor also works wonders for your memory. When you link a fact with a joke, your brain locks it in like it’s a hilarious secret you can’t forget. So, next time you need to remember something, just throw in a punchline—your brain will thank you later!

But wait, there’s more! Laughter—or even just having a decent sense of humor—can be a total game-changer in the corporate jungle too, where everyone’s racing to climb the ladder or prove they’re the next big thing. It strengthens team bonds and gives your energy a little jolt—leading to more productivity. Plus, humor is the secret weapon to break the ice when you’re meeting new people. Now, let’s be real—some of us might crack a joke and end up looking like we’re auditioning for a bad comedy show, and that’s totally fine! It takes effort to loosen up, flash a smile, and roll with life’s absurdities. But once we realize how powerful humor is at work, we can start reaping the rewards.

So, we really need to bring back giggles and grins into our everyday routine. But how?

Here are some ideas :

  • Start your day by finding at least one reason to smile before you even get out of bed. (If you can’t find one, just smile because you’re awake—it’s a win!)
  • Use humor when someone messes up, so they don’t feel like their world is ending. After all, mistakes are life’s way of giving us a crash course we didn’t sign up for!
  • Spend time with kids if you can——they’re like little stand-up comedians.
  • Share your own embarrassing stories with friends or coworkers and laugh about how you messed up too.
  • Try to find humor in the little things around you. Once you start, you’ll be amazed at how many funny things happen daily.
  • Watch a comedy movie or TV show every now and then. It’s like giving your brain a vacation from seriousness.
  • Hang out with people who enjoy the lighter side of life, not the ones who think the office coffee machine is a villain. After all, you become like the people you spend time with, so choose wisely!

While laughter may be one of the most underrated joys yet it’s the most contagious form of happiness we can share. Let’s all do our part to spread the giggles and turn the world into one big happy place!
